The green leaves of this handsome house plant are threaded with bright red veins, as well as attractively patterned along their midrib with yellow-green splotches. Once settled and the shoots have lengthened, mature plants often develop a delightful trailing habit. All in all, it's a showy plant, and curious too, as the leaves tend to fold their leaves up at night - which is why they are commonly referred to as prayer plants.
Originating from tropical regions, they like relatively stable temperatures (ideally above 15°C) and a well-lit position that does not get direct sunlight (think steamy jungle!). They like to be kept well watered, although this can be cut back a little in winter, and they thrive in high humidity, so either grow it in a steamy room, mist it with water regularly, and/or sit the pot on a tray of dampened shingle.
